Project Summary

*

Women remain underrepresented in artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced digital sciences, including data science, machine learning and advanced computing.

In particular, women researchers and professionals in AI-intensive sectors face barriers in access to research funding, technical leadership tracks and commercialization pathways. As APEC economies accelerate AI-driven transformation, addressing structural gaps in women’s participation in research and industry in STEM fields becomes essential for strengthening innovation capacity and human capital development.

In line with China’s APEC 2026 priorities of Openness, Innovation and Cooperation, this self-funded project proposes to conduct an online capacity-building seminar under PPWE, in collaboration with PPSTI, HRDWG and DESG. The seminar will primarily support policymakers by facilitating exchange of regulatory and institutional practices aimed at strengthening women’s participation in AI ecosystems. Industry and academia representatives will contribute corporate and research-based approaches, including recruitment, career progression and transition of AI research into market-ready solutions. The project will deliver a summary report with actionable policy recommendations adaptable across APEC economies.
