Breast cancer is a major and growing health and economic challenge across APEC economies, affecting men and women’s health outcomes, household wellbeing, and workforce participation. Globally, there were an estimated 2.3 million new cases and ~670,000 deaths in 2022, highlighting the importance of strengthening early detection, timely diagnosis, and continuity of care.12 This project will support APEC economies to advance early breast cancer policies by examining gaps in screening-to-diagnosis pathways, treatment continuity, and long-term follow-up readiness, using a non-binding, adaptable approach aligned with HWG priorities.
The project team will develop an APEC Breast Cancer Policy Paper and a system readiness assessment tool, drawing on existing evidence and targeted consultations with interested APEC economies, clinicians, and relevant experts. Building on these deliverables, a virtual APEC Policy Dialogue will convene participants across economies to review findings and identify feasible priority actions. Outputs will inform an APEC Breast Cancer Roadmap (2026–2030) to guide interested economies in strengthening prevention, early diagnosis, timely treatment, and survivorship follow-up, supporting better outcomes and more efficient use of resources across the region.
